I’m hard at work writing a new paranormal, the next dragon book, Dragons Don’t Lie and I thought I would share the first chapter (unedited). It releases in September. I promise I have the perfect mate chosen for Ashrac.
Looking down at the small white business card in my hand, I can’t help wondering what I’m doing here. I glance up at “PDA” etched in white script on the glass door in front of me. I’ve lost my marbles and sunk so low even my best snake eyes won’t save me. Shrugging my shoulders, I decide to go for broke. What the hell do I have to lose at this point? I open the door and shove it forward a little harder than I meant to. It slams against the far wall with a thud. An older woman behind the large oak desk looks up and I grimace inside my head. This won’t go well.
“Mr. Ashrac?” she questions in a sturdy, direct voice.
My back straightens and a low growl escapes my throat. “It’s Ashrac of the Red Dragon Clan,” I correct.
She rolls her eyes, pulls out a stack of papers, and arranges them on a clip board. “I’ll call you Mr. AOTRDC.” Her prissy lips say she thinks she has the last word on this subject. My eyebrows lift as I try to decipher what she’s talking about. “It’s the acronym for your name,” she adds with another eye roll and lifts the clipboard in my direction. “I’m Gerri Wilder of the Old Woman Clan. I’ve been expecting you for—” she looks at the large clock on the wall and then back at me, “two hours,” she chides.
I ignore the sensor of her words and take the offered clipboard.
“Fill out what you can and we’ll use a private room for your interview.”
“Interview,” I grumble under my breath as I take a seat and look at the first page of the form. It’s straight forward until I turn the page. “Humph,” I grumble again and flip through the next page without filling out the required lines. My, “this is ridiculous,” is loud. Gerri Wilder or GWOTOWC ignores me.
I turn in the sheaf of papers with only the first page filled in. Gerri looks through them, huffs and stands from behind her desk. She’s not even five foot tall and I have no idea why I’m letting her ruffle my scales. Her short white hair is a lie or at least I think it is. She’s shifter of an unknown variety. During my fifty years of visiting the human realm there have been many changes. This realm is now a melting pot of every paranormal creature imaginable. I’m undecided if that’s good or bad. Bottom line… I prefer my own realm where dragons are lords of land and sky. Even at my young age I’m old-fashioned that way.
GWOTOWC touches a button on her phone and a man steps from an office and waits by the door. “Follow me,” she says and walks through the door the man walked from. He heads to her desk and takes a seat. I follow as told even though fire heats my lungs. Dragons don’t like being bossed around.
The small room has one table with four chairs. The walls are white with colorful artwork positioned to their best advantage with accent lighting. Gerri takes a seat and stacks my paperwork in front of her. She lifts an eyebrow and waits for me to take a seat across from her. Once I sit she wastes no time. “We’ll go through each page and I’ll fill in the blanks that gave you such a problem.”
“Nothing gave me a problem I just didn’t wish to answer those stupid questions,” I tell her in a bored voice as I lean back in the chair and stretch my legs beneath the table. The room is too small and my dragon doesn’t like it.
She blows her bangs up from her face without blinking in obvious exasperation. “Do you want a date or not?”
“I want a mate not a date,” I correct her.
Now her gaze intensifies and the need to strangle her grows. Not that I actually would. Strangulation holds certain penalties in this realm that I’m not willing to pay right now. She continues talking like I’m no threat to her, “We will follow procedure. Finding you a mate begins with setting up a few dates.”
“No,” I say loudly while fisting my hands to keep from flying across the table. I don’t have time to waste and this woman is insufferable. “A mate is all I require. Match one to me and I’ll take her.”
She lifts the top page that I filled out and moves it to the back. She ignores everything I just said and insists on keep up this stupid charade. “First I need your shifter proportions—weight, height, and so on when you’re in dragon form.”
“Why?” I snap.
She gazes over the top of the paper completely unruffled by my semi-roar, damn her. “This will be more pleasant if you drop the attitude and help me here. I’m on your side.”
“I seriously doubt that,” I huff.
“Look Mr. AOTRDC, you contacted us. We provide a service. That service entails arranging meetings with several eligible females according to your specifications. If that isn’t what you wish, we can end this interview immediately.”
I give her my fire-breathing-dragon gaze and she has the audacity not to melt into the floor. “I want a mate,” I say and pound my fist on the table for emphasis. “I will kidnap her and take her to my realm where she’ll be held until she agrees.”
Gerri’s face goes from ghost white to red but I ignore that.
“My dragon form is as large as this building. Do you want my cock size for your form too?”
Without blinking she replies with a stubborn tilt of her head. “That question is on page six where your sexual preferences are covered. We’ll get there in a moment. This is easier if we do it in order.”
She still doesn’t blink. “I’m sure.” She marks a bit of information on the page and flips it over. “What are you looking for in a mate?”
I close my eyes for a moment and think about it before making a verbal list, “Docile, pretty, gently spoken, able to take orders. Frightens easily,” I add because I want her terrified when I kidnap her so we start our mating on the right foot.” I open my eyes in time to see Gerri shake her head. “What? You asked.”
She starts writing again and flips the next page over. “I need your social status.”
“What does that mean?”
“Can you afford a date, mate, wife, or concubine?”
I mull the word “concubine” over in my head because I like the sound of it. No, I tell myself. Mate only. “I have adequate wealth to keep one of each and it wouldn’t cause a hardship. My castle has just been completed and all it needs is a mate to handle my day to day personal care.”
Another head shake and more writing. She looks up after a few minutes. “Describe what is required for your care.”
This woman is something else. Are men really so different that she would need to ask this? “I want meals on the table at the proper time morning, noon, and night. I require a clean castle that runs like a finally tuned machine. My mate will handle those details along with her mate duties in my bed.”
She rests the papers back on the table. “So basically you want a sex slave?”
“No.” I shake my head. “A general slave who is seen and not heard would be better. Sex with me will be her bonus.”
I swear she tries not to smile. “I have just the woman in mind. You will date her first and if that doesn’t work out, you will call me and I’ll set you up with someone else. I think Flora will be perfect though and I’m rarely wrong about these things.”
“Good,” I grunt. “I like the name Flora. It sounds passive enough.”
Here’s the paperback cover

It’s Tahr, my silver dragon’s turn to find happiness. And of course it doesn’t come without him growing up and changing his perspective. It seems like I’ve been waiting so long to tell his story. I also hope I answer many of the questions readers have had about my world building.
Just a little secret… I take you on a quick trip back to Bastian, Laryn, Sarn and Tahr’s youth and also relive the day the curse began. The story has been in my head and it was so nice to have it come alive.
I’m going to miss these characters so much. Eventually I’ll need to drop in and see how they’re doing and I promise to share the experience with you.
I humbly ask my readers to leave a review where you purchased the book. It’s the nicest thing besides buying my work that you can do for me. Thank you and enjoy Tahr and his adventure as he discovers his mate in his own back yard.
Finally, Dragons Don’t Forgive is available. You will need to forgive me for this emotional story. Early feedback has been wonderful but everyone says they cried. I cried while writing so I guess we’re even. I’m working on book 4 and hoping to have it out in the next few months.
Here’s a friend’s message to me about Dragons Don’t Forgive…
“I am nearing the end of the book and I am bawling!!! I’m in such a conundrum. I need to turn the page to find out what happens but I’m so scared of being heartbroken if what might happen happens…”
Now don’t panic if you’re scratching your head. The Forever Team written as Suzie Ivy came out in the 10-Code Anthology back in January. I took the story and cleaned it up (language, sexual innuendo, i.e. typical cop stuff) to make it appropriate for age 10+ readers. It’s a short story about a female police detective who doesn’t get along with her fellow officers. She’s teamed up with a very special K9 because the dog can’t write complaints about her. I simply love this story and it’s the first of my books my grandchildren can read. It’s available for 99 cents as an ebook and $5.99 in paperback.
RtP came it at #49 which means it also made the print edition of U.S.A. Today. Because I live in a small town, I haven’t found a copy but I’m hopeful. It’s pretty cool seeing D’Elen McClain on the list and I made it last August as Holly S. Roberts. What a wild ride and it wouldn’t have happened without readers. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I also owe a huge thank you to the authors involved in this project. You are amazing women and I’m proud to be a part of this collection with you!
I’m taking a slight break in writing the 4th and final dragon book, Dragons Live Forever. Don’t worry, the break will only last as long as it takes for me to write this post 🙂 I’ve been in one of my crazy writing moods and I don’t want to jinx things.
My “break” yesterday consisted of printing the dragon covers and framing them. Maybe I’ll hang them in my office today and maybe not. We’ll see where writing takes me.
*May 19th: Just five more days, Romancing the Paranormal releases and you will finally get to read Fang Chronicles: Tyboll. The authors joining me in the anthology are awesome and I promise it will be the best single dollar a book lover can spend this year. Tyboll’s story is fun and sexy with many of the Fang characters you know and love. I can’t wait to hear your feedback.
*May 29th-31st: I’ll be in Scottsdale, Arizona at Arizona Dreamin’ If you live in the area, click on the link for the deets. I would love to see you.
*June 9th: Dragons Don’t Forgive releases. My editor wrote me a long email describing her emotions as she read it. She thinks this is the most romantic book I’ve written. She said there love jumps off the pages. I’ll be truthful and tell you that it’s a very emotional ride.
*June 8th – 12th: Hubs and I are taking a short vacation. And yes, it’s smack dab in the middle of the Dragon release. This was the only time we could mesh schedules with the neighbor/dog sitter (If you have a wonderful sitter like I do, you’ll do just about anything.) Somehow I’ll survive and enjoy myself.
*July 25th: I’ll be at the Payson Book Festival located in Payson, Arizona. This one day event is huge and I’ve also been asked to speak along with signing my books. Over 50 Arizona authors will be in attendance in the cool pines of this lovely town.
*July 30th: – August 1st: I leave Payson and head to Phoenix for my flight to New Orleans for the Author Reader Convention so if you live in the area I would love to see you. Reader tickets for all 3 days are only $15.
*August, no set date: Dragons Live Forever releases. I’ll know more the closer I get to finishing the story.
When I write paranormal, I read contemporary and vice versa. With what I’ve been reading lately, I have a feeling my next book will be a smoking hot story. Just saying!
I would love to see you at any of these events. Be sure to let me know if you’re coming so I can bring you something special. When not traveling, I’ll be hard at work writing, gardening, and taking care of my spoiled dogs. Don’t forget about me if I’m away from social media for awhile. It means another book is in the works. And please don’t hesitate to contact me at email@example.com if you have any questions or just want to say hello. I need the interaction to keep me grounded and the writing muse flowing.
Now… like I promised when I started this post, I’m returning to Dragons Live Forever.

Dragons Don’t Love Excerpt
I sharpen my two-foot steel blade before holding it up against the morning sun. The light shines off the blade, which fractures it into multiple beams of brilliance. Soon it will bathe in blood—the magical blood of a dragon. I will clean off the gore using my white bride’s dress and dance in the red puddles after I kill him. No sister of mine will become a dragon’s bride today. My death for this deed will be satisfying—the ultimate sacrifice.
I’ve spent most of my life preparing. No one in the village knows my true intentions. My parents think I’m reconciled to my fate. I was born during the span of years that established me as a claiming bride. A week ago, a proclamation went up throughout town informing the brides that our time has come. Our duty to keep the peace between dragons and humans demands our presence at the claiming. Today.
Early on, I used my family’s need for fresh meat and my father’s disability as the reason for learning to hunt. Every minute of every day that I could safely get away from home, I sharpened my skills. If the men of my town won’t defend the women, I will.
Slipping off my dreary daily garments, I don the beautiful, white, sacrificial gown required to entice my enemy. I secure the sword into the hidden back sheath knowing I can remove it and use it before anyone stops me. The virgins of this town will truly have something to celebrate tonight. I adjust my dark hair so it completely covers the blade’s grip. I walk from the glade with my shoulders back and my head held high refusing to acknowledge my racing heart and shaking knees.
I have a dragon to kill.

My house is a mess, my dogs miss me and my husband wonders if I’ll ever escape the writing cave. I do appreciate him for tossing in a scrap of food here and there. Oh and those bags of Skinnygirl Popcorn. I was a Gobstopper addict for years while in the zombie writing zone. Now old age is catching up and my waistline can’t deal with the sugar. So, I found a slightly better alternative. I tell myself it’s okay because it’s the only labeled non-GMO corn I can find.
Dragons Don’t Love book 2 of the Fire Chronicles will release on May 5th. This is Laryn’s story. He’s the dragon that kidnapped Acasia in book 1 Dragons Don’t Cry. And just here, I’ll tell you a secret. If you haven’t read book 1, it will go on sale for 99 cents during the month of May so hold up on ordering your copy!
Dragons Don’t Love is available for pre-order $2.99
