BEHIND THE STORY

There is a story behind every book I write. From Detective Eve Bennet to my  survival thrillers, I rely on life experience and research to guide my writing. Welcome to Wicked Story Telling behind the scenes for links to my research and interesting tid bits about the books.

Story Behind Marinah

Writing Marinah and the Apocalypse was a labor of love. Marinah is the daughter of a good friend and she died much too young. Her story and the way it impacted her family struck a cord in me and I couldn’t let it go. I asked Dinah, Marinah’s mother, “Can I write a book about Marinah where most of the world dies and she lives on?” Dinah said yes, and the Marinah books were born. I wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming connection this story would create in my soul. Dinah opened her heart with pictures of Marinah along with the story of her life. We met in Tennessee and Dinah shared Marinah’s Instagram account with me. She also sent me one of Marinah’s shirts which hangs in my closet. I wear it on the day I type, The End, for each book. I had to squeeze into it this time but I wore it. Writing the last book in the series was bittersweet and I’ll admit I cried. I’m blessed to have Dinah as a friend and I can’t express her generosity and love. Below is Marinah’s story told by her mother. Her name was Marinah. Tribute Site for Marinah

I want to thank Holly for letting Marinah live through this series. I want to thank her for loving Marinah and for caring. It means so much to me and I could never thank her enough or express how much it means to me. When Holly asked me to write something about Marinah from my heart, it took several days to decide what I wanted to write.

I wanted everyone to know what kind of person she was. I wanted everyone to know that she had so much to offer the world and that she made the world a brighter place when she was in it. I wanted them to know that she was funny, smart, feisty and sassy. She was the most stubborn person I’ve ever known.  She knew how to push everyone’s buttons and was quite good at it. She was passionate about the things and people she loved. She was never judgmental and would stand up for the underdog. She had a way with words and would have made a great writer. She dreamed of being an actress and would have done well at that too. She loved music, especially Taylor Swift. She knew every episode of Supernatural inside and out. She did the things other girls did growing up. Girl Scouts, dance, soccer, swim team, basketball, cheer, she tried her hand at guitar and played the clarinet in band and sang in chorus. She was tall with naturally curly hair.  She was gorgeous, being out with her was like being with a celebrity because people always stopped and asked if she modeled, played basketball, etc. They were always coming up to us and telling her how beautiful she was. These things never went to her head, though they did amuse her. There are a million things I can say about her and the 19 years two months and 24 days that I had with her. I can tell you that it wasn’t enough time. She was so full of personality and brought an energy to the room whenever she entered. Her life mattered and her death mattered.

Now on to the "not so good" stuff, Marinah also suffered from mental illness.  As many intelligent, creative and empathetic people do. She tried to get the right combination of therapy and medications right so that it could be controlled. To give you an idea of how she thought about things that can be harmful; Marinah was a vegetarian the last 3 years of her life. When she was about 6 she came home from school one day crying and telling her dad that she didn’t want him to die and if he kept smoking he would die.  (He stopped smoking) Unfortunately, in spite of all of these things; she made the bad decision of trying drugs. For someone with an addictive personality, all it takes is one time. I once heard someone say that an addict doesn’t do drugs to feel good, they take them to not feel so bad. I think that was the case with Marinah. More than once during the last year of her life she told others that she didn’t want to feel.  She left our home on Christmas after celebrating with her sister, brother, parents and other family members. The next morning, she didn’t wake up. She had taken what she thought was Percocet. It was fentanyl. Marinah didn’t deserve to die. There are thousands of people like Marinah that die every day from drugs. Many of them are dying from fentanyl. These people are often young, smart, sweet people that are beautiful inside and out. It can happen to anyone, it can happen in any family. I want everyone to enjoy getting to know Marinah. As I read this book I could see Marinah saying and doing the things that she said in the book. I could picture everything taking place with her. As if enjoying the story and characters wasn’t enough, I got to imagine a world where Marinah got to have all of these experiences she didn’t have in life. In a small way, it’s almost like having her alive again. I don’t want the reality of her life cut short to take away from enjoying the characters and books. I do want her life to matter. I want to raise awareness that thousands are dying every day from overdoses and it’s an epidemic. It’s far worse than what the media portrays.  There’s a stigma attached and a lot of judgment. The same can be said for mental illness. We need to end the stigma and advocate for awareness. If Marinah’s story can keep another family from going through what she went through and what my family will go through for the rest of our lives I’m happy to share it.

Her name was Marinah. 10/1/96-12/26/15

Thank you Holly.

From Dinah (Callie's Story)

Marinah got Callie (and her littermate Lexie) as kittens when she was about 6 years old. Callie was originally hanging out with Marinah’s older sister Nikayla but Marinah absconded her for herself.

I always joked that Callie had Stockholm Syndrome because she always put up with Marinah doting on her and always picking her up and dragging her around, but Callie still adored her.  Even as a young adult if Marinah saw Callie giving someone else attention she would go and pick Callie up and take her off to her room.

IMG_2710

Marinah said Callie was her soulmate and we worried about what Marinah would do when Callie died, especially after Lexie’s death.

We never considered needing to worry about what Callie would do if Marinah were to pass on first.  Never.  When Marinah passed away Callie would sit outside her bedroom door and meow and would sound so distressed.  There was nothing anyone else could do for her, she adored Marinah and that’s who she wanted.

Callie died less than two months after Marinah.  She couldn’t handle Marinah’s death.  Those two really were inseparable.  I always figured that Marinah reached down and grabbed her just like she did in life and Callie was ready and waiting for her.

Story Behind Depth

Size comparison

I took a deeper dive into research for Depth. The idea behind the book came from a video I watched via Discovery Plus on YouTube. It’s terrifying! Due to human stupidity it’s worth watching. It will be the first link below.

I loved revisiting Ryan and the trauma due to her experience aboard Ryan’s Gift. How would someone with her family background respond to marine biology life. I really enjoyed writing her fear and growth as she channeled her mother in order to fight for her life and those of her friends.

sharks are friends not food!

great white small

Jerry, the captain was another fun character. I knew someone years ago who was a lot like him and had a heart of gold. I’ve also known several Clarissa’s and it was really hard not to have her eaten. Smitt might be my favorite out of everyone. He’ll return for a future book along with Dr. Stirling and Blakely. Ryan will make a brief appearance. The storyline is building in my head and I’m really excited to feature the bluntnose sixgill shark. The last video in my research list shows how amazing these massive creatures truly are. The working title of the next book is POACH but that could change as the story develops.

Thank you for reading my work and taking an interest in sharks. Never forget over 100 million are killed each year which is incredibly sad when they are needed desperately to maintain our eco system.

Story behind the Story: RABID

Joan is my mother. I have so many stories about her kicking ass, but this one, showed how strong she was early on. When I was 9, my mother divorced my father in the deep south for abuse. This was 1970, four years before women could have a credit in their name. The house she rented with her three children, was owned by the bank and they didn’t want to rent to a divorced woman. Unable to find a renter, they acquiesced. She left the house in better condition that when she moved in and they gave her a credit card in 1973. Banks weren’t required to give women credit until the following year. Directly after the divorce, she needed to acquire a 4-year degree in 2 years. She asked Columbus Tech what program started first and went year around. Electronic Technician was the answer. They told her no woman had ever completed the course, and she should wait for something more suited to her. She thumbed her nose and finished #1 in her class. Her first job was working a military contract. She went to work on Eglin Airforce Base in Florida after gaining a top security clearance. She has never spoken about what she did there.

Fast forward and my mother moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for Intel. Several years later, she became the first female technical supervisor. Years later, her supervisor told her she would never be a regional manager, the job she had applied for, because they didn’t want to put up with wives’ complaints over her meeting one on one with their husbands. Refusing to take no for an answer, she applied again. Three year later, she became the first female in the position. Her region included Puerto Rico, White Sands, and Fort Huachuca. To this day she doesn’t speak about those military contracts either. After she retired in 2000, at age 55, she wanted to get away from the world. Using her savings and Intel stock, she purchased 99.06 acres in the Arizona high desert. She does not allow it to be called 100 acres.

The property she acquired is exactly how I told the story in RABID. It had a bathroom, battery room, and six garage doors. She separated one part of the garage from the rest of the home for a vehicle, added a sink, laundry hookup, and a wind generator for solar backup. The inside and out were beautiful. The property itself is breathtaking, and the pictures below are some of my favorites. There is an entire hillside with peach crystals, and I discovered my love for rock hunting. I found an anthill garnet and I’m on the lookout for more.

The images of her garage/home show her vehicles with the hoods open because it deters mice and rats from eating the wiring. The largest door is where here living room is. Behind the house is what’s left of the windmill. When it broke, she decided not to replace it. Each picture holds significance for RABID. The hills Joan climbs are in one of the pics too. They are sometimes more than hills but not quite mountains. The running wash is all her land and now mine. The image of the wash is captured from her backyard.

I’ve said this before and will repeat it throughout my life. I am proud to be my mother’s daughter.

Story Behind the Story: BREACH

I want you to picture a young girl living in Florida near the Gulf of Mexica riding her bike every summer day to go swim in the ocean. If friends weren’t available, I would go on my own. Yeah, I know swimming alone isn’t wise but I was a water child and lived to swim and explore. There was an outcropping of huge boulders near the pier in Ft. Walton Beach that was a favorite of mine for jumping and playing pirates or mermaids. One night (we had a sitter for the weekend), I rode my bike to the pier just to see the ocean. It was a big deal because one of my mom’s rules was no bike riding after dark, but remember, babysitter. About an hour into my curiosity of what they fished for on the pier, someone caught something big. I stayed and watched until they pulled in a twelve foot giant hammerhead shark. I had never seen anything like it. The fisherman and the shark fought a battle I will never forget. The other interesting reaction I had was the sadness that such an awesome creature died. It stayed with me. Now transport yourself forward in time two years. We moved from Florida to California and I was back on the ocean again. Before I could dip my toe in the water and return to my mermaid roots, my mom took me to the drive in theater to see the latest hit movie. JAWS. My ocean adventures came to an end because sharks scared the shit out of me. And now, I hope to scare the shit out of you with BREACH.

Diving into the Depths: The Research Journey for "Breach"

Writing a novel is an adventure, a deep dive into the unknown where each chapter is a stroke that takes you closer to the abyss of your imagination. When I began working on "Breach", I knew I wanted to create a narrative that was as immersive and intense as the deep-sea adventures that formed its backdrop. This post will take you behind the scenes into the extensive research and personal experiences that shaped this underwater thriller.

The Spark of Inspiration

The inspiration for "Breach" stemmed from my endless fascination with sharks that sprang up because I spent my days swimming in the Gulf of Mexico as a child when Jaws, the movie, released. The unpredictable ocean and shark life intrigued and terrified me. I was drawn not only to the physical dangers but also to the psychological impact of isolation while fighting for your life. This sparked the idea of a story that combined suspense, the raw force of nature, and the human element of resilience.

Researching the Deep Blue

The first step in my research was to understand the environment where my story would unfold. I submerged myself in studies about marine biology, oceanography, and the ecological impacts of deep-sea fishing. Books, scientific articles, and watching interviews with marine experts on YouTube expanded my knowledge base, allowing me to paint a vivid picture of the ocean's beauty and brutality.

One of the most impactful experiences was a trip I took on a fishing boat with my family twenty years ago. We arrived at the marina and my youngest turned to me and said, “We need a bigger boat.” Spending the day in the ocean’s vastness helped me capture the essence of life aboard a yacht—the smells, the sway of the deck under my feet, and the endless horizon that both isolates and liberates.

Characters Born from the Sea

The characters in "Breach" are as complex as the ocean itself. From Kate, the determined mother, to Ryan, the precocious five-year-old, each character was sculpted to reflect the range and depth of human emotion when those you love the most are in danger.

Challenges Along the Way

Writing "Breach" had its challenges. Translating the fear and allure of the ocean depths into compelling text was a formidable task that often left me as isolated as my characters.

Conclusion

The research for "Breach" was a deep dive into the unknown, much like the adventures of the Carter family. This journey not only educated me about the world beneath the waves but also about the resilience of the human spirit. I hope that readers feel that cold touch of the ocean's depths and emerge thrilled and thoughtful from the story. All puns are intended.

Story Behind the Story: Eve Bennet

In 2006, Warren Jeffs was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. I was working in Arizona as a sex crimes and homicide detective a few hours away from the FLDS (Fundamental Latter-Day Saints) compound in Arizona City and Hildale, Utah.

Through the years, I had come into contact with several women who had escaped Warren Jeffs and the strict rules of the FLDS. Though they remained in plural marriages, their families tried to stay under the radar and live quietly.

I worked with Mormon officers and found it strange that when I asked about the FLDS, I was assured they were not and had never been Mormon. Through my research, I’ve learned that this was not true. The FLDS and many other Mormon sects that practice polygamy believe they are the true Mormons as described by their founder and prophet Joseph Smith and continued by Brigham Young, the prophet assigned after Smith.

As per the Latter-day Saints current website:

____________________________________________

“In biblical times, the Lord commanded some to practice plural marriage—the marriage of one man and more than one woman. By revelation, the Lord commanded Joseph Smith to institute the practice of plural marriage among Church members in the early 1840s. For more than half a century, plural marriage was practiced by some Latter-day Saints under the direction of the Church President.”

_____________________________________________

One of the shakeups within the church happened in 1978 when the largest denomination of Mormons allowed Black men to become priests (known as taking the priesthood). Many felt this went against the teachings found in The Book of Mormon and they left the main branch and went to one of many fundamental sects that continued their racist beliefs and lived a plural marriage lifestyle. There are over 100 active polygamist cults in the U.S. I had no idea the rabbit hole I would fall into when I began my research.

_____________________________________________

"The attitude of the Church with reference to Negroes remains as it has always stood. It is not a matter of the declaration of a policy but of direct commandment from the Lord, on which is founded the doctrine of the Church from the days of its organization, to the effect that Negroes may become members of the Church but that they are not entitled to the priesthood at the present time.”
—First Presidency statement, August 17, 1949

_____________________________________________

In 2006, fugitive Warren Jeffs was arrested in Nevada during a traffic stop. In 2007, in Utah, he was sentenced to ten years to life for being an accomplice to rape of underage girls, as young as twelve. In 2010, Jeff’s conviction was overturned by a Utah court for flawed jury instructions and he was extradited to Texas and sentenced to life plus 20 years for the rape of two girls ages 13 and 15.

It was around 2010 that I became aware of the corruption in law enforcement surrounding the Hildale, Utah compound that allowed the lifestyle of child rape to flourish. To stop the corruption, a federal judge placed oversight on all law enforcement within the Hildale community. My mind took me to what if and Eve Bennet was born.

Eleven years later, I signed the 3 book contract for the Eve Bennet series with Bookouture Hachette. These books are the product of hours of blood, sweat, and research. If you are fascinated like I am, I encourage you to delve further into the following list of movies and articles I used to write the books:
